A Short History of
West Kent Shooting School
In 1969 Pat
and Barbara Lynch took up Clay Pigeon Shooting and was soon involved with the
organisation of various Gun Clubs throughout Kent, which at that time were
usually once a month venues based on a Skeet Range or a Down-the-Line Layout
with some of these grounds still running today, one being the Kent Wildfowlers,
(Detling). Realising the potential there was in shooting on a more professional
basis and the desire of many people to learn to shoot properly and safely, in
1974 Pat and Barbara both qualified as CPSA Instructors and in that same year
they started the West Kent Shooting School.
The School was based at East Malling
on the edge of West Malling Airfield and on the actual site of the US Air force
Rod and Gun Club which had been in operation for some 10 years until the Air
force left. We also had sites at Elm Court, Gillingham, and Badsell Park Farm.
The Shooting School offered Practice and Competition facilities for Skeet,
Down-the-Line, Universal Trench and a Small Sporting Layout including a Tower.
In those days
automatic self loading traps were still in the design stage and all clay traps
were hand cocked normally by strong willing youngsters earning their pocket
money, prominent amongst these was 10 year old Michael Lynch, literally learning
the family business from the ground (and trench) up and often from the
precarious scaffolding tower down. Interestingly the first regular scorer/button
presser/squad hustler was a young 20 something bearded wildfowler named Chris
Potter!
In 1984 the Shooting School moved to its now permanent home at Paddock Wood, the
15 acre partly wooded site allowing for far more testing shooting layouts which
comprised the old faithful Skeet and DTL but included a 10 stand Sporting
Complex, Automatic Ball Trap, Double Trap and one of the best Compact Sporting
Ranges in the South. The instruction side of the business boomed with Michael
Lynch becoming the Chief instructor and adding his skills as an expert Gun
Fitter to the range of facilities on offer. In 2001
Michael and his wife, Gillian purchased the business from Pat & Barbara. The
team at the Shooting School grew, with now nine Qualified Instructors with
the anchor “men” being Ground Manager Robin Riley, and Administrator Sara Warwicker.
The School recognised many years ago the potential of Corporate Entertainment
and it's `have guns will travel` mobile facility providing shooting throughout
the South East at venues like Newick Park, Chilston Park, Hever Castle, Brands
Hatch, Eastwell Manor, Penshurts Place, Buxted Park, Selsdon Park Hotel, Horsted
Place, Tudor Park Hotel, and Great Danes Hotel to name a few and soon realised
that the shooting provided for these Corporate days needed to be more
sophisticated and backed up by the highest quality facilities in a luxurious
clubhouse setting. The superb new clubhouse is a direct result of these plans.
With the modern clubhouse, improvements to the shooting facilities and the warm
welcome from Gillian, Michael and their staff, this is Kent’s premium shooting
ground.
We offer a range of Lessons, Gun Fitting, Gift Voucher, Corporate Entertainment,
Conference Facilities and Practice Layouts in English Sporting and Skeet
We continue to grow and in August 2007 we
opened an accessory and clothing shop adjacent to the clubhouse and in April
2008 our webshop went live
