ON THE SIDE club NOTICE BOARD
NOTES FROM THE FIELD - OUR SEASON SO FAR
28th October, Small Bore day - Vinehall - written by Peter Campion
What a day the guns were armed with 28 bores and 410s and what a team Paul H 410, Alfie N 410 Colin B 410 Timmy B 28 bore Ed M 28 bore Paul M 410 Simon R 410 Damion 410 Andrew S 40 and Peter C 410
I for one started the day with some trepidation my concern was with pricked or wounded birds and placed myself as back gun intending to dispatch any birds not cleanly killed, my fears were completely unfounded. I had only 3 birds to dispatch on the 1st drive, 2 on the 2nd drive and saw only 3 runners all day which were cleanly picked by the dogs. All the guns surpassed themselves with superb shooting. From my various positions during the day I saw a number of fantastic shots, the ones that will stay with me was Paul H's partridge, but for me the Andy Skinner towering pheasant a shot that would have been exceptional with a 12 bore. The beaters and pickers up rarely noted for their kind words for the guns (they think they shoot better) congratulated all. 105 birds was the bag and a very happy bank of shooters. Thanks for a memorable day.
5th November - Chevening - written by Peter Campion
For the last two season John Wright has presented us with some good shooting. I have flet that we had not done justice to his birds. This season however we came up trumps and dispelled the doubters as tot he shooting ability of the "On the Side Club" members and their guests. The team, Mick (last minute replacement for Trevor) Ann, Richard, Nigel, Ben (his first day), Alfie, Ed, Peter P and Peter C
We shot 100 birds a mixture of pheasant and partridge a number of duck were also taken. We were the first team to sample Johns superb shoot lodge and good food. I would like to thank you all for a goods days shooting - DID ANYONE GET TO GRIPS WITH JOHNS NUMBERING SYSTEM?
11th November - Vinehall - written by Peter Campion
Another good day guns and guests once more showed their skills with 91 birds in the bag. On the siders and guests were Mark B (and dog) Peter P, Alfie N Ed M Chris B Phil R, Colin B and Timmy B Peter G Ann H Paul H and Peter C
Chris Baker on his first outing shot some very good birds although the last and new drive frustrated him somewhat. Alfie had some good shots, I do however think that Peter Payne shot some of the best birds I have seen this season, well done Peter. Colin the keeper has I feel excelled himself for us so far this season with plenty of birds more partridges and the new mouth-watering drive, as a note form one who cares I am pleased with the skill levels of all of you this season. As ever its been a pleasure shooting with you all.
We had our two minute silence for our fallen heroes and Colin told me after the shoot it was exactly 91 years since the end of the first world war and we shot 91!
We still have three days to go 28th November, 23rd December and 2nd January - the season is looking good.
Letter to Members 2009/2010 season
Dear
On the Side Club – Membership Renewals
2009/2010 Season
Another enjoyable year had by all.
Further to discussions with various members the following
points have been put forward
It has been proposed that we change from
a Wednesday to a Tuesday.
The majority have agreed to this, but if there are
any objections please let me know as soon as possible.
I was asked whether we could do any
helice within the On The Side Club.
It was decided that the first shoot of the season
will be the Hurlingham Cup – Helice side by side shoot, where traditional game
attire is worn.
I enclose a leaflet for this.
It was further mentioned that helice be
included as part of a normal shoot.
I did explain to those the costs incurred and that
there will be a minimum charge for this.
We will not be able to run this until Spring 2010
and nearer the time I will let you know costings.
However please note that if we do proceed to hold an
On the Side Helice Shoot there will be a minimum charge and this will be as a
group not per head so if only 10 turn up it will cost more per head than say 20
of you turn up, so this needs to be considered.
I will get feedback from you at the next shoots
before we proceed to costings.
For those unaware of the price of a helice target it
is £1.20 per shot, plus fee for set up and two staff.
It has been suggested that on one of our
shoots we have a sweep stake to raise funds for a charity of our choice.
Any suggestions on the charity we can support would
be greatly appreciated.
All shoots will continue to be 100 birds
This year everyone is entitled to win
under the handicap system, however a shooter may only win it twice during the
year, thus allowing others the opportunity.
I have revised the handicap system as set out below:
80-100
+0 to your score
79-69
+5 to your score
68-49
+10 to your score
48-30
+20 to your score
Under 29
+ 30 to your score
Can I remind everyone that this club was set up to enjoy the
traditions of shooting and the winning aspect was just a bit of fun.
Membership Fees
The membership fee will be the same as
last year of £10.00. Then
at each shoot you pay for your clays and breakfast/lunch.
The price of the shoots and lunch will remain the same for
this season
100 Bird shoot
£26.00 (members)
£32.00 (guests)
Two Course Lunch
£9.00 per head
Breakfast shoot
£16.00 (full English Breakfast and 50 clays)
There will be a penalty fee charged (£5)
if you book to come for the lunch and then do not turn up.
This also goes the other way, if you turn up and
have not booked, those booked will have priority on lunch.
We will continue to hold six shoots a
year
I have tried to keep the same format as
before with regard to the shoot dates, being the first Tuesday of each month.
Proposed Dates:
Wednesday 14
October (Hurlingham Cup Helice)
Tuesday 3 November (Breakfast / practice)
Tuesday 2 December
Partridge Shoot /
Dave Coomber Skeet Challenge - Christmas lunch)

Tuesday 6 April (Duck

Tuesday 4 May (Breakfast / practice)
Tuesday 1 June (Woodcock

Tuesday 6 July (Breakfast / practice)
Tuesday 3 August (Grouse

I enclose a membership form for the 2010
season.
Please can these be returned to me.
I would appreciate them completely filled in, as I
know some peoples email addresses or details may have changed.
I hope it has been a very enjoyable year for the club and the
enthusiasm continues for 2010.
If anyone has any queries or has further suggestions or
comments please let me know – as we always mention at the various shoots this is
your club, run for you and by you.
Many thanks
Yours sincerely
Gillian Lynch
Woodcock Shoot - Tuesday 2 June 2009 ("Golden Gnome")
A slight date changed due to a pre-booked event on the Wednesday but we still had the numbers of OTS members attend a very warm June day - long may the weather continue.
Four groups shot a testing 100 birds over 12 stands and they were testing with the scores reflecting this.
Lunch was duck breast with braised pea and little gems with spring onions and crushed new potatoes was consumed heartedly.
Paul Hollamby was the proud recipient of the Golden Gnome with a very good 74/100
Alf Newman was the OTS Champion with a 60/100

PIGEON SHOOT - Wednesday 4 February 2009
Well the snow was upon us in full force on Monday which saw the south east cut off - but the brave shovelled through and we had a good turn out for the Pigeon Shoot.
As always this consisted of a 75 sporting layout and 25 skeet with Charlie Milne (Guest Shooter) high scoring the Skeet with a very good 24 and winning the Janet Alden Smith Pigeon Salver with Sharon "The Toe" (broke her toe on the bed - say no more!) winning the ladies salver. Peter Campion had had sleepless night and had come up with some token prizes for the days shooters, a walking stick, a further stick was handed to Peter Payne, as we believe that at this years Game days he struggled up those hills, so Peter thought he should have one. Neal Cope was presented with a trophy to stop talking about his gun! and Neil Baker received a plaque for being our newest member - thanks Peter.
Peter Campion and Sharon won the OTS trophies
Lunch was peppercorn and cider pheasant followed by sticky toffee

HAMMER
ONLY DAY
22nd OCTOBER 2008
Our first venture into retro
shooting(some of us are retro all the time) i.e. old fashion and what good fun
it was with Timmy and Colin Bridge using black powder adding some realism to the
day. Good shooting was seen from all the guns, towards the end of the day there
was unexpected gusts of wind from various quarters which did not affect our
shooting this was attributed to Collins first class soup.
We shot 94 good birds.
On the sidders in attendance
were Ed (sardonic smile ) Marriott, Dave(I blew it up)Comber Paul(anorexic)
Hollamby, Alfie(the pigeon)Newman, Peter (slow walking )Payne, and Peter
(fantastic)Campion, our guests, Paul Warwick, Colin & Timmy Bridge.
A good day thank you gentlemen - Comment of the day from the beating team

OTSC 13th Dec
Our last shoot this season, what a day freezing wind and rain all day. It was
also a day of exceptional shooting Alfies pair of ducks” Neal Copes excellent
last drive Dennis shooting some fast curling pheasants, and Caroline’s duck &
pheasant.
The weather did however get
to us in the end and we decided to miss out the last drive and call it a day we
shot 66 pheasants 11 duck - Russell and his beating team worked very hard to
present us with some good shooting thank you team.
Side by siders ALFIE, NEAL,
ED ,MARK , DENNIS, CHRIS ,NIALL,CAROLINE AND GUEST DOUGLAS.
Maybe we should forget the
weather and remember your good days shooting.
THANK YOU ALL
PETER C
ok I lost the results from the Partridge Shoot in October, hence no report or publishing the results, but I do know that OTS Trophy was won by Kevin Walsh and the Dave Coomber Skeet Challenge Decanter was won by - Congratulations.
So I have made a point of putting results immediately onto the website for this event. This was the Dave Coomber Challenge Shield (in its 5th year) and each year has had a different winner. The Challenge consists of 60 sporting, 15 Tower, and 25 skeet. Some tough birds on the 60 Bird Sporting by the way some of the results were low, but even though a bitter chill was amongst the groups and I mean the weather, everyone enjoyed themselves and welcomed the hot toddies when they returned for lunch. Lunch was venison followed by sticky toffee and cheeseboard.
The winner of the Challenge Shield was Barry Tynan with a very good 88
The OTS Trophies was won by Kevin Walsh, (twice this season) with a 73
OTS Ladies was won by Sharon Purford with a 58
Mark Blackden kindly donated a bottle of wine for a prize and this was handed to the "wooden spoon of the day" Frank Shepherd to enjoy.
And finally the Pink Pigeon - it was nominated that maybe Dave Coomber should receive it for not attending his own shoot, but the vote went unanimously to Ed Marriott for numerous reasons, one being his gun does not fit, his muddy boots and he will not pay for a lesson!!
See you all in February

Once again a very good turnout - and this time the weather stayed in good steed.

The Shoot was sponsored by Alfie Newman and Peter Campion, where Peter did a proud job on producing a unique range of Duck trophies, together with a "Silly Old Duck" trophy which was presented to Paul Hollamby for exortinating money from fellow competitors. The Pink Pigeon went straight to Paul Barry, whose phone rang during the presentation and from what we understand was ringing during the shoot!
The targets were testing this shoot but enjoyed by all - lunch was duck pasties and duck potato balls, followed by sticky toffee and cheesecake.
It was great to see the fun come back into the last two events as we appeared to loosing sight in

SATURDAY 8 DECEMBER - VINEHALL SHOOT
What a day rain and very high wind (if it was a clay shoot it would have been cancelled),because of the elements we decided to shoot through - Colin gave us 5 drives, his team working very hard to show us some birds the guns started off reasonably well but as the day went on the cold and wet took its toll there were some notable shots Mary on her first solo day 6 or so birds one of which I witnessed that i felt was the shot of the day, Caroline shot in her normal exuberant style Ali dressed in multi layers of clothing braved it up to the last drive which she sat out being to cold and wet to continue I believe all the guns had some shooting although our bag was only 36 birds, a day we shall remember for the wrong reasons lady luck was not with us.
From my own stand point i think a day like that makes us better shots in the long run it certainly makes the team get closer together(even if for added warmth) thank you all again for a entertaining day thank you Colin and your team for your efforts. So MARY ,PHIL,EDD,ALFE.ALI,CHRIS,CAROLIN,SIMON(STEVE) PUT THIS DOWN TO EXPERIENCE .

DAVID COOMBER 100 BIRD CHALLENGE "PHEASANT SHOOT" - 5 December 2007
What a horrible day and I only mean the weather - we could not have asked for anything worse - 60mph gusts and heavy showers - the offer was made at the beginning of the morning to skip the shooting and go straight to lunch, but no the hearty shooters wrapped up stuck on their waterproofs and were mad enough to go and shoot - I jest. The day consisted of a 25 skeet, 15 tower birds and 60 bird English sporting
RESULTS
David Coomber Challenge Shield : Neale Cope
David Coomber Skeet High Gun: Mary Rowley (who shot a 23/25 her best ever with the nearest score being 20) - WELL DONE
OTS Senior: Charlie Milne : 40/60 apologies to Phil Rowley who we presented the trophy to before I checked the scores and realised Charlie beat him by one - SORRY
OTS Ladies: Mary Rowley 29/60 unfortunately we had no trophy as this was with flue bed ridden Sharon from the last shoot - we wish her a quick recovery.
Then it is down to the PINK PIGEON - Trevor if you are reading this IT IS NOT YOU! - the pink pigeon this time was not taken to a vote - but given straight to Peter Campion for having too many senior moments - so Trevor he is looking after it for you for the next two months.
Finally the Dave Coomber Skeet Decanter was won by Dave Coomber this year and gracefully filled it with Port for everyone to finish of their lunch of partridge. THANKS
Wednesday 7 November 2008
